Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet for dogs: the label, read closely

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Links to Amazon on this page are affiliate links.

Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet is a sardine and anchovy oil sold as a liquid and as softgels. The liquid lists 621 mg EPA+DHA in 2.5 mL, or 248 mg per mL. The softgel lists 270 mg per softgel. These figures come from the manufacturer's published label data, not from a lab test.

This page reads the manufacturer's published label data and compares it with the rest of our catalog. It is not a lab test and not veterinary advice. For how we collect and check numbers, see methodology.

The product line in our catalog

Nordic Naturals sells pet omega-3 in several packs and in versions for dogs only and for dogs and cats. We list the two dog products most buyers meet:

EPA and DHA: what the label says

For the liquid, the serving is 2.5 mL (about half a teaspoon). It supplies 368 mg EPA and 253 mg DHA, with 759 mg total omega-3. The gap between the total and the EPA+DHA figure is other omega-3 fats, which is why we compare EPA+DHA rather than the headline total.

For the softgel, one capsule supplies 165 mg EPA and 105 mg DHA. In both products EPA is the larger share, as it is in most fish oils.

Per mL against other liquids

At 248 mg per mL, the Nordic liquid is more concentrated than Nutramax Welactin Canine Omega-3 Liquid (16 fl oz) (222 mg) and Grizzly Salmon Plus Oil (32 fl oz) (196 mg), and close to Iceland Pure Sardine Anchovy Oil (17 fl oz) (248 mg), another sardine and anchovy oil. It is less concentrated than Nutramax Welactin Advanced 3TA Omega-3 Liquid (8 fl oz) (440 mg). Higher concentration means a smaller measure for the same EPA+DHA, not a better oil.

What the label does and does not disclose

Where the figures disagree

Nordic's own pages are not fully consistent, and we would rather tell you than pick one quietly. The maker's website blocks automated fetching, so we took the liquid figures from the product page as shown in search results, not from a photo of the bottle. Older Nordic booklets list a lower 2.5 mL serving (345 mg EPA, 207 mg DHA). Retailer listings for the softgel also disagree on how much body weight one softgel covers (the catalog notes 20 lb on the maker's page and 10 lb on some listings). Read the bottle in your hand and prefer its numbers over ours.

Who it fits, and who should look elsewhere

It fits dog owners who want the fish named, a plain oil without added flavor, and the choice between liquid and capsule from one brand. Small dogs are easy to dose with the liquid because a half teaspoon covers the first weight band, and the label scales up in 2.5 mL steps.

Look elsewhere if you want a visible NASC seal on the page, a stated molecular form, or a product that lists a bottle size and servings count for the liquid. If you need much more EPA+DHA per mL, compare the higher-concentration liquids in our ranked list. For a salmon-based alternative see salmon oil for dogs.

How to dose it with the calculator

The label gives weight bands: 20-39 lb: 2.5 mL (0.5 tsp); 40-59 lb: 5 mL; 60-79 lb: 7.5 mL; 80-110 lb: 10 mL; 111+ lb: 12.5 mL. Those bands are the maker's guidance. As a cross-check, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist has published 50 to 75 mg of combined EPA+DHA per kg of body weight per day as a supplemental range for adult dogs. The National Research Council's safe upper limit is about 370 mg times body weight in kg to the 0.75 power per day, including EPA+DHA from the diet. Put your dog's weight and these label numbers into our dosage calculator. Ask your veterinarian before starting, and read about side effects.

Softgel or liquid?

The softgel is the simpler choice for travel and for dogs that accept capsules, and its count gives you a fixed number of servings per pack. The liquid is easier to adjust in small steps, which helps with small dogs and with dose changes your veterinarian asks for. The two differ in how much EPA+DHA one unit carries, so you cannot swap one softgel for one 2.5 mL serving. Work from milligrams, not from units. Our liquid vs softgel vs chews page has the full comparison.
