Fish oil for dogs: liquid vs softgel vs chews

For fish oil for dogs, liquids are usually the most concentrated and the easiest to scale to a dog's size. Softgels are easy to count but fixed in strength. Chews are the easiest to give, but the EPA and DHA per piece varies widely, and many makers publish no numbers.

Choosing between liquid, softgel and chew fish oil for dogs is mostly a trade between convenience and concentration. All three can supply EPA and DHA. What differs is how much each serving holds and how well your dog takes it.

How much EPA and DHA does each form give?

Using manufacturer label data from our catalog, here are examples of each form:

So a single teaspoon of Iceland Pure Premier Omega Oil for Large Dog Breeds (17 fl oz) carries 2,614.2 mg, while a softgel carries a few hundred and the chews we list carry from about 105 to 900 mg each. That gap shows up when you work out what a large dog needs. Serving sizes differ, so always compare EPA and DHA, not "per serving" by itself.

Liquid fish oil for dogs

Liquids come in a bottle with a pump or a teaspoon measure. The per-mL figures give a fair comparison between brands.

Fish oil softgels for dogs

Softgels are capsules of oil. Some dogs take them whole in a treat, and some owners puncture them to squeeze the oil onto food.

Fish oil chews for dogs

Soft chews are the easiest to give to picky dogs, because they taste like a treat. For some chews in our catalog we could not find EPA and DHA on the maker's site, so the table below shows every chew in the catalog, including those with no numbers.

Which form for picky eaters, small dogs and large dogs?

Whichever form you choose, the amount that matters is EPA and DHA. Our dosage calculator turns a label into servings.

Oxidation and storage

All fish oil can oxidize, which means it can go rancid. Heat, light and air speed this up. These are general points, not test results for any product:

Labels do not show how fresh an oil is, and we have not lab-tested any product. Some makers state third-party testing, and we record it only when they do.

The short version

If you want the most EPA and DHA per serving and an easy way to scale, a liquid fits most dogs. If you want zero measuring, a softgel works. If getting your dog to take it at all is the problem, a chew is better than no supplement, as long as you know how much EPA and DHA it provides. See the best fish oil for dogs picks, the full comparison table, or salmon oil for dogs. Ask your vet before starting.

Frequently asked questions

Are fish oil chews as good as liquid for dogs?

They can deliver the same EPA and DHA, but the amount per chew varies widely, from 105 mg to 900 mg among the dog chews that publish it. A large dog may need several chews to match a liquid serving. Compare EPA and DHA per serving on the label, and ask your vet about the amount.

Can you give a dog fish oil softgels?

Many dog fish oil products are softgels. Check the EPA and DHA per softgel, and ask your vet about the amount. Some dogs swallow them whole in food, and some will not.

Which form is best for small dogs?

Small dogs need small amounts, so a liquid you can measure in small steps or a low-strength chew can be easier than a softgel that is too strong. Your vet can help with the amount.

Does fish oil expire?

Yes. Fish oil can go rancid with exposure to air, heat and light. Follow the storage directions on the label, close it after use, and do not give oil that smells sharply off.

Should I refrigerate fish oil for dogs?

Follow the label for your product. Some makers recommend refrigeration after opening, and some do not. We do not have a general rule for every product.
