Salmon oil for cats: what the label shows

Salmon oil for cats is a fish oil whose label names salmon as the source. Compare it with other fish oils by EPA plus DHA per mL and per serving. No safe upper limit exists for cats, so we give no dose. Ask your vet for an amount in milligrams of EPA and DHA.

Salmon oil is a common fish oil for pets. Its useful parts are the same omega-3 fats found in other fish oils, EPA and DHA. What differs between bottles is how much of them a serving holds. This page shows that from manufacturer label data. The wider comparison is on fish oil for cats. We do not test products, and we show no prices.

Salmon oil compared with blends

The salmon oils in the table list 130.9 to 261.7 mg of EPA+DHA per mL. Three cat-labeled liquid blends and sardine-anchovy oils (Nutramax Welactin Feline Omega-3 Liquid (4 fl oz), PetWellbeing Omega-3 Icelandic Fish Oil for Cats (8 fl oz pump) and Seapet Omega PURE Fish Oil for Cats (4 fl oz)) list 212 to 273.9 mg per mL, so the ranges overlap and the fish name does not predict strength. The sourcing differs too: Iceland Pure Salmon Oil Pharmaceutical Grade & Unscented (17 fl oz) names farmed Norwegian Atlantic salmon, while the blends name sardines, anchovies, herring or mackerel.

A lower number per mL is not a flaw. It means the same EPA and DHA takes a larger measure, which some owners find easier to handle with a small cat. It also means you cannot swap one oil for another by volume. See the full list in the cat comparison tables.

Reading a salmon oil label for a cat

  1. Find EPA and DHA in milligrams per serving. NaturVet Salmon Oil for Cats (liquid pump) lists 645 mg in a teaspoon. Check how many pumps or mL the label directions give for a cat, since a serving here is not a cat's portion.
  2. Divide by the mL to get strength. For that product it is 130.9 mg per mL.
  3. Check the ingredient list for other oils or additives, and for a source of vitamin E such as tocopherols, which helps protect the oil.
  4. Do not use dog directions on a bottle made for both species without asking your vet.

Frequently asked questions

Is salmon oil really good for cats?

Salmon oil supplies EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fats cats need in small amounts. We found no study showing that salmon oil does more for cats than other fish oils, and we cannot promise a coat, skin or joint benefit. Your vet can say whether your cat needs it.

Can I feed my cat salmon oil every day?

Veterinary sources express omega-3 as a daily amount that includes the cat's food. Because no safe upper limit exists for cats, we do not set a daily amount. Ask your vet whether daily use suits your cat and how much to give.

How much salmon oil can I give my cat?

We do not give an amount. No safe upper limit has been published for cats, and the one supplemental figure we found is a single nutritionist's practice (see fish oil for cats). Compare the EPA and DHA per mL on the label, then ask your vet for a number in milligrams.

Is salmon oil better than fish oil for cats?

Not on the label numbers we have. The salmon oils in our cat table list 130.9 to 261.7 mg EPA and DHA per mL, and the three cat blends we name list 212 to 273.9 mg, so the ranges overlap. Salmon is the source on the bottle, and the figures are what you compare.

Can I give my cat salmon oil made for dogs?

Some bottles are labeled for both dogs and cats, and their directions may be written for dogs. We found no source showing that dog salmon oil is unsafe for cats. Check the ingredients, compare the EPA and DHA, and ask your vet about the amount.

Does salmon oil have vitamin A like cod liver oil?

Salmon oil is not cod liver oil, which VCA names as a common cause of vitamin A poisoning in cats. We did not find vitamin A amounts on the salmon oil labels we checked, so read each label and ask your vet.
