Fish oil for dogs with itchy skin: what the research shows

Research on fish oil for itchy dogs is limited. A 2010 systematic review found one high-quality trial where an essential fatty acid supplement let dogs with atopic dermatitis use about half as much prednisolone. Fish oil is not shown to cure allergies or stop shedding. Find the cause of the itch with your vet first.
Scratching, licking, red skin and a dull coat are the reasons many owners start looking at fish oil. This page summarizes what published sources say, and where they say little. It is a source summary, not veterinary advice, and it has not been checked by a veterinarian. We make no treatment claim and give no skin dose.
Why the cause of the itch comes first
Itchy skin in dogs can come from fleas, infection, food reactions, environmental allergy (atopic dermatitis) and other problems. Each needs different handling, and a supplement does not replace a diagnosis. The current international treatment guidelines for canine atopic dermatitis (Mueller et al., Veterinary Dermatology, 2026, PubMed 42805756) describe reactive treatment for flares and proactive treatment to maintain control. The abstract we read lists skin barrier support, infection control, allergen avoidance, immunotherapy and several prescription drugs, and says no single intervention suits every dog. It does not name fish oil. We could not read the full text, so we cannot say how the guideline grades fatty acids.
What the trials found
The main evidence summary is a systematic review of randomized trials of interventions for canine atopic dermatitis (Olivry et al., Veterinary Dermatology 2010;21:4-22, DOI). It covered 49 trials with 2,126 dogs published from 1980 to 2007. For essential fatty acids, the authors report that one high-quality trial showed an oral supplement could reduce prednisolone consumption by approximately half. They also state that more high-quality trials are needed.
Read that with care:
- It is a single trial, and the review is now old.
- The review calls it an "essential fatty acid supplement." We could not confirm that it was fish oil or an omega-3 product rather than a mixed fatty acid blend.
- The effect was a smaller steroid need in dogs already under treatment. It was not a cure and not a replacement for treatment.
- We could not open the trial itself, so we do not know the exact product or amount, and we quote no dose.
A 2026 narrative review of omega-3 and immunity in dogs (Barroso et al., Vet Anim Sci, PubMed 42569613) describes the canine evidence as limited. That matches what we see for skin.
What we could not verify
- Shedding. We found no veterinary study of fish oil and shedding that we could open and check, so this page makes no claim about it.
- Coat shine. Owners often report a glossier coat. We did not find a controlled study we could verify.
- Food allergy. Our sources do not test fish oil for food allergy.
- How long it takes. We have no verified timeline.
What this means for choosing a product
If your vet agrees that a supplement is reasonable, choose by the EPA and DHA milligrams on the label, not by the words "skin and coat" on the front. The table below lists dog products with label numbers we recorded. Our dosage calculator turns the suggested supplemental range for adult dogs into a number of pumps or softgels for the product you pick, and warns when an amount passes the NRC safe upper limit. Higher amounts used in studies are set by a veterinarian. Check the full comparison and method before buying.

Cautions for dogs with skin problems
- Dogs with allergies may already take a prescription drug. Do not stop or change it because you added fish oil.
- Loose stool and vomiting are among the commonly listed side effects. See fish oil side effects in dogs.
- Add one new product at a time so you can tell what caused a change.
- Oily skin, odor or greasy coat can mean infection and needs a vet, not more oil.
When to call your vet
- Itching that keeps your dog awake, or scratching until the skin is raw.
- Red, wet, smelly or crusted skin, or ear infections that return.
- Patchy hair loss or sudden heavy shedding.
- Swelling of the face, hives or trouble breathing. Go to an emergency clinic at once.

Frequently asked questions
Does fish oil help dogs with itchy skin?
Some evidence exists for dogs with atopic dermatitis, but it is limited. A 2010 systematic review found one high-quality trial in which an essential fatty acid supplement cut prednisolone use by about half. The review does not say that supplement was fish oil. Itching has many causes, so see your vet before trying anything.
Is fish oil good for dogs with allergies?
Fish oil is not shown to cure or prevent allergies. In atopic dermatitis it has been studied as an add-on to veterinary treatment, with modest evidence. Your vet decides what treats the allergy itself.
Does fish oil reduce shedding in dogs?
We found no veterinary study we could verify that tests shedding, so we make no claim. Heavy shedding or patchy hair loss is a reason to see your vet.
What oil is best for dogs' itchy skin?
We cannot name one oil as best for itch. If your vet agrees to a supplement, compare products by the EPA and DHA milligrams printed on the label. See the label comparison.
How much fish oil should I give my dog for itchy skin?
We do not give a skin dose. The calculator shows the suggested supplemental range for adult dogs and the NRC upper limit. A vet chooses any higher amount. See fish oil dosage for dogs.
Is salmon oil better than fish oil for dog skin?
We found no head-to-head trial in dogs. Both supply EPA and DHA, and the amounts differ by product. Read fish oil vs salmon oil.
